German TT 2011

Any raceweekend is different. This time we were travelling with small equipment and had an extraordinary compact schedule, all over less than 8h….. At the end of last season the team decided for 2011 to compete in the BEARS races. It turned out at the seasonstart at the Eurospeedway Lausitz as a bad idea, when not many competitors showed up. So we decided to join with the Erik Buell Racing 1190 RR also the Superbike open races, a competition mostly for inline fours who not needed to be homologated or for productionbikes with major changes. If you have real power in your bike and an allergy against long rulebooks, this is your class. Unfortunately had Pegasusraceteamrider Harald Kitsch before seasonstart fixed to race on that weekend with the Ilmbergerteam a 6h Endurancerace with the BMW S 1000RR at Oschersleben. So it was a bit a stressweekend for him when he practiced on Thursday / Friday at Oscherslerben, won the race on Saturday and needed to show up Sundaymorning 7.30 at the natural Schleizer Dreieck Roadracing Course for the Superbikeraces at the German TT. 80% of the Schleiztrack is normal daily roads who are blocked at the raceweekends, a outstanding experience and a track that need real man if you like to go fast.

Of course had our competitors Friday and Saturday Tracktime and of course they had 2 timepracticesessions on Saturday. But there was a 3rd Timepractice left on Sundaymorning 9.00 o´clock, that must do what´s necessary, 20 Minutes to set the time. And again our good friend since Assen was with us, the new low noise exhaustsytem with the pipe through the swingarm. 7.30 sharp, Harald showed up in the paddock, we had really minimum effort, just a 3 x 3m Quickuptent, 2 bikes, 2 toolboxes and a coffeemachine. The Saturday was hot with Temperatures up to 29 degree C. For the Sunday they reported 32C and Thunderstorms in the afternoon, -not again please! The EBR 1190 had some new features like an optimized AST Forksetup, a new Enginemapping and a rebuilded engine after that Assen problems, more than enough to be nervous. First of all we need to get the bike in this 20 minutes at least 1 time around the track to getting qualified, second a row one start, what require a finish as 1.-4th would be fine. If the bike fail, we go home without a race and possible points. Harald got out on the track on the point and after less than 2 minutes we know ok we are in the business. The Polesetter, riding one of the new Aprilia RSV 1000 Factory, had a 1:30.56 on the list, in 2010 we were somewhere at 1:29 at the end of the weekend, but with more tracktime and on much cooler conditions, because the temperatures already had moved up to 27C. At the end of the session it was only a 5th startingplace with an 1:33.465, Two S 1000 RR and a CBR 1000 Fireblade completed the frontrow with the RSV directly in front of Harald. Lucky for us, it was possible to get some more tracktime before the race to hunt the missing speed and sort out a watertemperature problem. At the end it was a bit from all, some adjusting here, a remapping for a different throttleresponse there, to get the package going. Usually you have two days and a warmup to find the setup for the day, here it was 3 hours…..

Highnoon 13.50 o´clock, 32degrees C was the start for the first race. We are still not sure if our competitors started so well or if Harald caught a bad start, but in the first corner the EBR was on 6th. We counted that Harald will clean up the field to 4th quickly, but we hoped that he on the way would not loose too much time to the leaders. It worked and after 2 laps we had the last podium and Harald was cutting down the laptimes from lap to lap, going 1:30 times try to close the cap to the on 2nd running S 1000RR rider who was going 5 /10 slower than him. At the half of the race he was behind him, but a S 1000 RR is not so easy to pass, as we have seen several times this season and it needed another 3 laps for Harald to go over. But the gap to the RSV was to wide, at the end we brought home a 2nd and the fastest laptime.

Race 2, 3h later, the temperatures were still very hot, Harald with nobody in front of him, after the RSV did not showed up in time at the startline, got a better start and came back as 3rd into the second lap, were he took the other riders and didn´t gave back the lead for the race. Regarding the high temperatures and our challenges in 14 days, he rode as quick as needed and brought the team home the second Superbike victory of the 2011 season. Very well done! Thanks to all who made it happen!

Upcoming next is the Festival Italia at Oschersleben, for that event we hear rumors that we will get some extra fun with factory BMW, a real fast RSV, Jan Christiansen from Danmark with his Gixxer and finally Frankie Chily will give us the honor on a Ducati 1198. Stay tuned!
